Infant mortality is the most sensitive index we possess of social welfare.

-- Julia Lathrop, First Director, Federal Children’s Bureau, 1913

100 families each year suffer the loss of an infant in our community…this is far too many! As this graph clearly demonstrates, infant mortality in Leon and its surrounding counties is high compared to our state.  Even more alarming is the fact that our rates are actually on the increase…our community is moving in the wrong direction.

In Leon & Wakulla counties more lives are lost during the first year of life than in any year of the lifespan until age 74.
In the African-American community, more lives are lost during the first year than in any other single year of the lifespan.
