Health Education at Healthy Start…

…for the community…for healthcare professionals

Healthy Moms have Healthy Babies,” our Health Education program, disseminates critical prevention information in three ways:

  • Professional and volunteer “Network Partners” participate in our “Train the Trainer Program.” “Network Partners,” many of whom are already working with pregnant women and women of childbearing age, receive on-going training in healthy pregnancy promotion and use “Healthy Moms have Healthy Babies” knowledge and materials to educate their clients.  Sixty-two partners were trained in 2005.

  • Healthy Pregnancy Network staff reaches out to the community!  We travel to local churches, agencies, schools, beauty salons & health departments.  We’ll go almost anywhere to get our messages out.  All Health Education is provided free of charge and we are always seeking new invitations & opportunities.

  • Healthy Pregnancy Network educational materials are distributed throughout the community.

Prevention of Douching PDF Print E-mail

Despite growing scientific evidence highlighting the health risks, douching is still a regular practice among American women and it is more prevalent among African American women.  The Centers for Disease Control estimates that approximately 27%  of U.S. women ages 15-44 douche regularly. Over half of those women are African American and 21% are Caucasian.

Numerous studies have linked douching and sexually transmitted diseases, upper cervical infections, and the low birthweight of babies. Women who douche have a 73% increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease, a 76% increased risk of tubal pregnancy, and an 86% increased risk for cervical cancer. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that women avoid douching because it can hide symptoms of an infection or push the infection farther up into the reproductive tract.
